How To Cure An Infected Toenail

‘Paronychia’ commonly referred to as a nail infection, is commonly seen in a fingernail or toenail. This is a bacterial infection that results due to nail biting, finger sucking, because of washing dishes or using chemicals with bare hands. This type of nail infection can be caused even by fungi growth under the nails. Being a common condition it is found to affect people worldwide. However, there are many effective infected toenail treatments.

Types Of Nail Infection

Acute paronychia – This is when you find a sudden swelling around the nail that is warm and painful. This type of nail infection is caused when the skin around the nail gets injured.

Chronic paronychia – In this case, the infection starts developing gradually and often causes swelling and tenderness on the skin surrounding the nail. It can be a fungal toenail infection also.

Ingrown nails also cause lesions in the skin and this might lead to a nail infection. The toenail cuts through the skin tissues and digs in deeper into the skin as it grows. It’s a highly painful condition. Even though preventable, ingrown nails are quite common.

Pulsating pain, redness, warm and swelled up skin around the nail are the main symptoms of acute paronychia. Formation of pus is seen in some cases either next to the infected toenail or under it.

A more chronic version of this condition will be less painful initially. The skin around the nails becomes tender, red and mildly swollen. There is always a certain moist feel to the skin. This usually affects several nails at the same time.

Care & Cure Toenail Infection

Soak the toenail in a warm mixture of 50% warm water and 50% liquid antibacterial soap for about 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times daily. This is especially beneficial when the redness is initially seen.

Mild antibiotics can also be taken as prescribed by your doctor for curing toenail infection.

The nail has to be kept as dry as possible. It needs to be dried thoroughly if it has been exposed to moisture.

Mix one part of vinegar to three parts of water and soak the infected toenail in it.

After the pus has been ejected, wash feet with an anti-bacterial soap and follow it up by using an anti-bacterial hand cream

Cutting the toenails in square shape helps in preventing infected ingrown toenail.

Cramming feet into small shoes is harmful for the nail as it might develop into an ingrown nail.

The good news is that, there is treatment for toenail infection. If is not cured within a span of 5 to 10 days even after using homemade remedies, you need to see the doctor. It might be a case of chronic paronychia. This condition is commonly seen in children and usually in adults who work in a damp environment.

Infection will get worse with 15 minute soaks for 3x per day.

2 minutes, in good salt water and then put a dry dressing on and do that daily. If it is because of an ingrown toenail, get to a Podiatrist to have it painlessly removed.

Squeezing puss from a wound spreads around the infection.
